Chilean visual artist, painter and printmaker. He studied drawing, painting and engraving at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Chile.
He then studied lithography at the School of Photomechanics in Madrid and at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Berlin and painting at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France.
Dittborn created his own pictorial genre: the Airmail painting, works that achieve an elaborate aesthetic that appeal to time, to the interval expressed by the traces of the journey and in the folds of the support and to a subversion of the consumption system that makes art more expensive.
Airmail paintings were conceived during the Pinochet dictatorship, «a pragmatic invention» that allowed «Dittborn to communicate beyond Chile’s borders without relying on the existence of an elaborate cultural infrastructure.»
