Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe

Sheroana, Venezuela, 1971

Artist. His experience in the creative field began in 1992, when he learned to make handicraft paper with native fibers under the guidance of Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata. The same year, he initiated and led the Yanomami Owë Mamotima project (The Yanomami Art of Making Paper), which led to the production of the book Shapono (2000), which received the award for Best Book of the Year. On two occasions (2010-2012), he attended the workshop of the Interdisciplinary Arts Department of Columbia College (Chicago, USA), where he learned new papermaking techniques. His exhibition career began in 2010, with a solo show at the gallery Oficina #1 (Caracas, Venezuela). In 2012, Hakihiiwe won the First Prize at the Conaculta’s International Biennial of Contemporary Indigenous Arts (Mexico DF). He has recently participated in goup exhibitions at the Berlin Biennial (2019); Parasite Hong Kong (2020); Denver Museum, Kunsthalle Vienna, Pivô in São Paulo, and the Andalusian Contemporary Art Center in Seville (2021). In 2021, he presented solo shows at Lisbon Kunsthalle (Lisbon, Portugal), Ana Mas Project (Barcelona, Spain), and FDAG Gallery (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). In 2022, he is participating in the Kathmandu Triennale (Nepal).
